Erotic Love and Redemptive Agape: A Canonical and Dogmatic Reconsideration of Song of Songs 1:1–17

Abstract. This article rereads Song of Songs 1:1–17 through grammatico-historical exegesis and the methods of Reformed dogmatics and canonical typology. It makes three claims. First, the lovers' longing in 1:2–4 resists both allegorical evaporation and secular hedonism. Over against Solomonic imperial imagery, it recovers an Edenic covenantal subjectivity and anticipates the union of Christ and church within a Davidic "shepherd-king" messianic whole. Second, the self-description in 1:5–6 expresses a covenantal self-regard and a fidelity maintained under social shame, grounded in the imago Dei. Third, the imagery of 1:7–17 builds, through canonical typology, a theology of an alternative sanctuary that reaches its fulfillment in Ephesians 5 and Revelation 19.

I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Theological Problem of Song 1

1. Background and Aim

Song of Songs 1:1–17 is among the most sensuous passages in the canon. Its language of bodily caress and emotional longing has pressed on interpreters since antiquity. Within the Old Testament, the divine name (Yahweh) never appears in the book, and the text depicts physical intimacy between a man and a woman without explicit moral or theological comment. Premodern commentators found this a serious problem [1, 2]. Many of them dissolved the literal and historical horizon of the book and read the whole as a spiritual communion between God and Israel, or between Christ and the soul. Such allegorization was a retreat from the text [3, 4].

The cost of that retreat was high. It devalued the creational goodness of the human body, sexuality, and emotional intimacy, and it drifted toward a Gnostic dualism that the creation narrative does not allow [3, 5]. Modern historical criticism and naturalistic readings reacted in the other direction. From the nineteenth century onward, many treated the Song as a collection of secular love poetry from the ancient Near East, comparable to Egyptian material. This reading secured the text's literal sense, but at the price of cutting it off from the eschatological and redemptive horizon that its place in the Writings of the Hebrew Bible makes available [6, 7].

This study has two aims. The first is to practice disciplined grammatico-historical exegesis on 1:1–17, restoring the creaturely purity and social reality of the love depicted. The second is to show, through the covenantal and mystical-union theology of Reformed orthodoxy and through canonical typology, how the passage extends organically toward the holy union of Christ and church [8, 9].

2. The Landscape of Scholarly Debate

Scholarship on 1:1–17 divides along three axes.

First, hermeneutical genre: ahistorical allegory versus historical wisdom poetry. The patristic and medieval tradition, represented by Origen (c. 240) and Bernard of Clairvaux (1153), turned the kiss of 1:2 into the incarnate teaching of Christ, the oil of 1:3 into the Holy Spirit, and the dark skin of 1:5 into the original sinfulness of the church before its redemption [3, 4, 10]. Tremper Longman III (2011) and Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart (2003) reject such allegory as a violation of the author's intent and of the text's historical reality. They read the Song as wisdom literature that celebrates fidelity and mutual union between a man and a woman, in light of the creation order of Genesis 1–2 [6, 11]. This study accepts the creational premise of Fee and Stuart. It also seeks to avoid their naturalistic reduction, which closes the redemptive horizon by confining the text to its literal sense.

Second, narrative cast: two-character drama versus three-character drama. Franz Delitzsch (1885) read chapter 1 as a two-character drama about King Solomon and the Shulammite, a historical love story that deepens over time [12, 13]. Iain Provan (2001) separated the "king" of 1:4 from the "shepherd" of 1:7. He read the book as a three-character drama in which a woman resists Solomon's harem and the seductions of royal power and remains faithful to a rustic shepherd lover. He also heard in it a social critique of empire [14, 15]. Duane Garrett (2012) argued on grammatical grounds that "king" functions as a poetic motif that idealizes the bridegroom's nobility rather than as a reference to a historical figure [16]. This study takes seriously the anti-imperial tension in Provan's reading. However, it argues that this tension must be reintegrated canonically so that the messianic unity of the "king" and the "shepherd" in Christ, the threefold munus of the Mediator, is not broken.

Third, the nature of canonical typology in theological hermeneutics. Bruce K. Waltke (2012) and Kevin J. Vanhoozer (2008) stress the difference between allegory and typology. Allegory, in their account, pairs two sets of ideas arbitrarily and sets aside historical reality. Typology is a canonical correspondence grounded in the historical reality (res) of the Old Testament. It develops within redemptive history and finds its fulfillment in the New Testament relation of Christ and church, as in Ephesians 5 [8, 9, 17]. Anthony Thiselton (2012) and Hans Frei have shown that genuine typology does not oppose the literal sense (sensus literalis) of the text. It is that sense's natural extension within redemptive history [9, 18].

3. Presuppositions and Thesis Statements

This study proceeds from the presuppositions of canonical-theological hermeneutics and historic Reformed covenant theology. It also draws on the results of historical-grammatical criticism. It advances three theses:

  • Thesis 1. The longing and kissing of 1:2–4 reject both ahistorical allegory and secular hedonism. Against the materialist harem rhetoric of Solomon's empire, the passage restores the Edenic covenantal subjectivity of Genesis 2. Within the messianic "king–shepherd" unity of the Davidic covenant, it prefigures the unio mystica of Christ and church.
  • Thesis 2. The phrases šəḥôrā wənā'wā ("dark but lovely") and karmî šellî ("my own vineyard") in 1:5–6 proclaim an existential fidelity maintained within patriarchal oppression and a culture of honor and shame. They also declare the original dignity of the imago Dei, which the Fall does not destroy, and the self-respect of a covenant people justified before God.
  • Thesis 3. The imagery of 1:7–17, including the midday rest, Pharaoh's royal chariot, exotic spices (nard, myrrh, henna), and the green bed and cedar beams of nature, does not work through word-by-word doctrinal coding. It builds a canonical typology of an eschatological alternative sanctuary. In that typology, the one-flesh covenant of Genesis 2:24 is completed in the marriage supper of the Lamb in Ephesians 5 and Revelation 19.

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

The analysis begins with the superscription of 1:1, šîr haššîrîm ’ăšer lišlōmōh (BHS), and proceeds through 1:2–17. It concentrates on several points at the level of the Hebrew. In 1:2–4 these include the partitive-instrumental use of min in minnəšîqôt ("from the abundance of kisses"), and the paronomastic play of šemen ("oil") and šēm ("name"). In 1:5–6 they include the adversative function of waw in šəḥôrā wənā'wā and the emphatic double possessive karmî šellî. In 1:7 they include the dual morphology of ṣāhŏrāyim ("midday") and the shepherd motif. In 1:9–17 they include the image of the mare among Pharaoh's chariots, the round dining table (mesav), and the cedar and cypress beams of a natural sanctuary [19].

II. Main Argument: The Redemptive-Historical and Systematic-Theological Case for 1:1–17

Chapter 1: Messianic Office and Mystical Union (Unio Mystica): The Hebrew of 1:1–4 and Covenantal Intimacy [Thesis 1]

The superscription of 1:1, šîr haššîrîm ’ăšer lišlōmōh, fixes at once the literary status and the theological orientation of the book.

The phrase šîr haššîrîm is a construct chain with a superlative sense. A singular noun in construct, šîr, governs a plural noun with the article, haššîrîm. This is the same syntactic pattern found in qōḏeš haqŏḏāšîm ("the Holy of Holies") and meleḵ hamməlāḵîm ("King of kings") [20]. The construction declares that the Song is the most excellent of all songs [20, 21].

The prepositional phrase lišlōmōh has been read in several ways. The older reading takes the lamed as an auctoris, indicating authorship. Modern commentators have proposed that it places the book within a Solomonic literary collection or within the royal imagery of Solomon's court. That second reading is persuasive, because within the Song Solomon is set against the bride's desire: he is the symbol of a patriarchal empire that tries to buy love with wealth, and he has a thousand wives in the account of 1 Kings 11:1–3 [14, 15, 22].

Verse 2 opens with the woman's voice. She speaks with direct, active longing, which breaks with the male-centered conventions of many ancient love texts: "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth; for your love is better than wine" (yiššāqēnî minnəšîqôt pîhû kî-ṭôḇîm dōḏeyḵā mîyāyin).

[Syntactic analysis: Song 1:2]
yiššāqēnî (imperfect, 3ms + 1cs suffix): "let him kiss me"
└── minnəšîqôt (min + plural construct of nəšîqāh): "from the kisses"
└── pîhû (construct noun + 3ms suffix): "of his mouth"

The min attached to nəšîqôt should not be read as a partitive of lack, as if the woman were begging for a share. It marks the source and the instrument. The abundance of love flows from the lover's mouth [19, 23]. The plural of nəšîqāh is also significant. It is not a single formal greeting. The plural signals a repeated and intimate affection, a pluralis intensivus that expresses fullness [19].

The statement of verse 3 that "your name is oil poured out" (šəmeḵā šemen tûraq) uses the paronomasia of šemen ("oil") and šēm ("name"). Through this sound play the text makes the lover's character, his reputation, perceptible as a fragrance that spreads through the room [23, 24].

[Paronomastic structure: Song 1:3]
שֶׁמֶן (šemen: oil / perfume) ─── [phonological echo] ─── שֵׁם (šēm: name / person)
└── "poured-out oil" (šemen tûraq) ──> the fragrance of a personal character released into the world

At this point a critical correction is needed. As Wright has rightly observed, it is a mistake to read 1:4, "The king has brought me into his chambers" (hĕḇî'anî hammeleḵ ḥăḏārāyw), as a simple spiritualization of God's sovereign leading. Such a move erases the imperial tension within the text. In the Song, Solomon's chambers (ḥăḏārîm) are a worldly space in which material wealth and royal power try to capture a woman. She does not settle there. She calls out to the shepherd lover in the countryside: "Draw me after you, let us run" (māšəḵēnî ’aḥăreyḵā nārûṣā) [15, 25].

How then does this text relate to the revelation of Christ? Within the covenant theology of the Reformed tradition, the rejection of worldly kingship must be read alongside the Old Testament promise of a messianic "shepherd-king" in the Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7; Ezek 34; Ps 72) [26, 27]. In Ezekiel 34 God removes the shepherds who exploit the flock and sets "my servant David" over them as one shepherd (Ezek 34:23) [28]. The Christ of the New Testament overturns the oppressive royal power of Solomon's empire. He is also the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11) and the King of kings [27, 29]. When the woman refuses Solomon's harem and runs to the shepherd lover, she exemplifies the eschatological fidelity of the church. She rejects the reified values of worldly empire and moves toward unio mystica with Christ, the true covenant shepherd [17, 30].

Chapter 2: Covenantal Identity and Spiritual Fidelity: šəḥôrā wənā'wā and the Imago Dei in 1:5–6 [Thesis 2]

Verses 5–6 are a central passage for anthropology and for the theology of self-understanding. The woman describes her outward condition and her self-assessment: "I am dark but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon" (šəḥôrā ’ănî wənā’wā bənôt yərûšālāim kə’āhŏlê qēdār kîrî‘ôt šəlōmōh).

[Adversative structure and metaphor: Song 1:5]
שְׁחוֹרָה (šəḥôrā: dark: marked by field labor and social shame)
└── וְ (wə: "but" [adversative waw])
└── נָאָוָה (nā'wā: lovely: covenantal dignity not destroyed)

[Parallel metaphors]
tents of Kedar (כְּאָהֳלֵי קֵדָר) ─── [outward existence] ─── rough goat-hair tents of the desert
 vs
curtains of Solomon (כִּירִיעוֹת שְׁלֹמֹה) ─── [ontological worth] ─── the splendid linen of the royal court

Syntactically, the waw that joins the two adjectives šəḥôrā and nā'wā is adversative or concessive. In the honor-and-shame culture of the ancient Mediterranean, the contrast is clear [16, 19].

Verse 6 gives the reason for her darkness: "My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me keeper of the vineyards" (bənê ’immî naḥărû-ḇî śāmunî nōṭērā ’eṯ-hakkərāmîm). Her half-brothers, in their patriarchal anger, put her to labor in the open sun. The result was skin darkened by exposure, which by the standards of the urban court marked her as a person of low status [31].

An earlier draft of this argument treated the dark skin as original sin and the loveliness as forensic justification. That reading imports dogmatic categories into the text, and it should be abandoned. The darkness here is not moral guilt. It is the social shame and marginalization that come from environmental injustice and from the violence of empire and patriarchy [32, 33]. The woman's declaration, "dark but lovely," is a claim that she will not be shrunk by others' gaze. It proclaims the imperishable dignity that God gave her in creation, the beauty of the imago Dei. That is a covenantal self-regard [33, 34].

The climax of this anthropological affirmation lies in the Hebrew of verse 6b: "My own vineyard I have not kept" (karmî šellî lō' nāṭārtî). The phrase karmî šellî is an emphatic double possessive. A noun in the genitive (karmî, "my vineyard") is followed by a relative possessive (šellî, "which is mine"). Its sense is roughly "my vineyard, that is, my very own vineyard" [19].

In the Song, the vineyard is a double metaphor for the woman's body, her chastity, and her personal self [14, 25]. Her brothers forced her to guard other people's vineyards, and she had no time to tend her own appearance. Yet she has not sold her own vineyard, that is, her inner self and her exclusive love, to Solomon's harem or to the powers of the world. She has kept it pure [14, 19].

This passage therefore does not describe a mechanical transfer of forensic righteousness. It presents a model of "spiritual fidelity and covenantal subjectivity" in which a believer who lives under the grace of the covenant refuses to compromise under oppression and shame [30, 33].

Chapter 3: Canonical Typology and the Alternative Sanctuary: Poetic Imagery and Eschatological Fulfillment in 1:7–17 [Thesis 3]

Verses 7–8 turn the reader away from the noisy royal court toward a pastoral space of rest. The woman asks her lover: "Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock, where you make it lie down at noon" (šaggîḏā-lî šə’āhăḇā napšî ’êḵā ṯir‘eh ’êḵā tarbîṣ baṣṣāhŏrāyim).

The word ṣāhŏrāyim, "midday," is a dual form built on the root ṣ-h-r ("to shine"). It names the hottest and most dangerous hour of the day, when the sun seems doubled [19]. For livestock this is a time of peril. For the shepherd, however, it is the one time when he can lay the flock down in the shade and rest them (tarbîṣ) [19].

The woman does not want to wander beside the flocks of her companions like one who veils herself (‘ōṭiyyâ). The meaning of that term, and whether it carries a sexual connotation, is debated in the commentaries. What matters for the argument is that she refuses to wander and seeks the shepherd's place of rest. This is a figure of the soul's sabbath rest in Christ, the gracious refuge for the one who labors in a noisy world of work and temptation [25, 30].

The metaphor of 1:9 must also be read carefully within its historical and grammatical context: "To a mare among the chariots of Pharaoh I compare you, my love" (ləsusātî bəriḵbê far‘ōh dimmîṯîḵ ra‘yāṯî).

Marvin Pope read the mare as a tactic from ancient warfare, in which a mare in heat was released to disrupt a unit of stallions [35]. Wolfgang's successors Garrett (WBC) and Dugoid (TOTC) have shown that bəriḵbê far‘ōh refers not to a collective military chariot corps but to the private royal chariot of Pharaoh [16, 36]. The horses that drew such a chariot were adorned with gold, precious stones, and fine plumes. In comparing the woman to one of these horses, the lover praises her innate nobility and her dignity by the standard of the highest imperial splendor. He admires the strings of beads on her cheeks and the golden chains on her neck (1:10) [16, 36]. When he later says that "we will make you ornaments of gold with studs of silver" (1:11), the promise is not a bribe to purchase her with material goods. It is a pledge of complete affirmation and of the lover's devotion to her beauty [25, 37].

The threefold spice imagery of 1:12–14 (nard, myrrh, henna) is not a set of coded doctrines attached to isolated words. Following the philological judgment adopted in this study, the imagery is read in terms of covenantal intimacy and mutual indwelling between the lovers [23, 36].

[Triple spice imagery and covenantal intimacy: Song 1:12–14]
1:12 nard (nērd) ──> welcome at the royal banquet table (mesav) and the release of personal honor
1:13 myrrh sachet (ṣərôr hammōr) ──> the scent of the beloved kept between the breasts through the night; mutual indwelling
1:14 henna cluster (’eškōl hakkōpher) ──> vitality and healing from the oasis of En-Gedi, set in the barren Dead Sea wilderness

Nard (nērd) was a costly aromatic imported from the Himalayan region. Its presence at a round banquet table (mesav) pictures an intimate feast between king and bride [23, 38]. The woman's placing of the myrrh sachet between her breasts (1:13) signifies that she keeps the beloved's presence and scent even when he is absent. This is interpersonal mutual indwelling [23, 36]. The henna cluster (kōfer, 1:14), blossoming in the oasis of En-Gedi amid the arid Dead Sea wilderness, signifies fresh life and purity in a harsh land [23, 39].

These spices should not be read as fragmentary codes for the cross or the burial. They are an Old Testament anticipation of what the Reformed orthodox writers John Owen and Richard Sibbes called the sweet and exclusive inward communion between believer and Christ [40, 41].

Verses 16–17 gather the theological climax of the first part of the book: "Our couch is green; the beams of our house are cedar, our rafters are cypress" (‘arśēnû ra‘ănānā qōrôṯ bāttênû ’ărāzîm rahîṭēnû bərôṯîm).

The bed on which the lovers rest is not Solomon's artificial and luxurious royal couch. It is a green field (‘arśēnû ra‘ănānā) made by God [23, 36]. The beams of their house are cedar (’ărāzîm), and the rafters are cypress (bərôṯîm) [23]. Solomon built a man-made temple of Lebanese cedar (1 Kgs 6). By contrast, the lovers take the forest of nature itself as their sanctuary and their bed [23].

This is a restoration of the uncorrupted and holy creation that Adam and Eve enjoyed in the garden of Genesis 2 [11, 42]. It also anticipates the mystery of the one-flesh covenant of Genesis 2:24, which Paul interprets in Ephesians 5:31–32 as referring to Christ and church (mystērion). In that mystery the church is built together with Christ into the eschatological alternative sanctuary of the new heavens and the new earth (Rev 19, 21). This is the fullest form of canonical typology in the passage [9, 17, 43].

III. Objections and Replies

1. The Historical-Critical Reading of the Song as a Secular Anthology (Tremper Longman III)

Objection 1. Modern historical critics, including Tremper Longman III, argue that the Song has no unifying redemptive drama and no intention of typological or New Testament reference. It is, they say, an anthology of independent secular love poems that parallel ancient Near Eastern (especially Egyptian) love songs [6, 7]. On this view, reading Christ and church, or an eschatological sanctuary theology, into the text imposes an alien doctrine on it.

Reply 1. This study fully respects the literary features the Song shares with ancient Near Eastern love poetry and the literal sense of the poems as love songs. Longman's naturalistic reading, however, overlooks the final canonical form of the book as it has been received [8, 44]. As Brevard Childs and Kevin Vanhoozer have argued, a biblical book, once placed within the Writings, takes on a canonical meaning that communicates within the whole of redemptive history [8, 45]. The marriage order that God instituted in Genesis 2 is explicitly cited by Paul in Ephesians 5:31–32 as a "great mystery" concerning Christ and church [17, 43]. The pure covenantal love of Song 1 therefore cannot be treated as a secular text that has been frozen in place. It is read within the covenantal system of the whole Bible, which the single divine Author intended, and it is taken up as a typology that prefigures the unio mystica of Christ and believers [8, 9, 18].

2. The Rigid Three-Character Reading (Iain Provan)

Objection 2. Iain Provan argues that the "king" of 1:4 and the "shepherd" of 1:7 are incompatible figures. He reads the Song as a three-character drama in which a woman resists Solomon's corrupt court and harem and remains loyal to a rustic shepherd. For him, the book is a romantic and anti-Solomonic political satire [14, 15].

Reply 2. Provan's three-character reading captures the prophetic tension of the text, namely its criticism of Solomon's materialism, and so it offers real insight. Yet it imposes a complex narrative plot that the text does not supply [16]. As Garrett has shown through analysis of Hebrew poetics, "Solomon" and "king" in the Song function as poetic motifs. They express the splendor and nobility that the bride ascribes to her lover, and they are not a third villain [16]. Moreover, within the Davidic covenant (Ezek 34; Ps 72), "king" and "shepherd" are not mutually exclusive figures. They are two aspects of a single threefold office that is to be united in the coming Messiah [26, 28]. The king's chamber of 1:4 and the shepherd's midday rest of 1:7 are better read not as a conflict between two men but as a poetic duet that sings of the double grace of the bridegroom: messianic majesty and pastoral care [23, 27]. This reading is more coherent both grammatically and dogmatically.

3. The Ahistorical Allegory of the Church Fathers (Origen)

Objection 3. Origen and the medieval monastic tradition regarded the sensuous language of chapter 1 as unbecoming for Scripture. They read the kiss of 1:2 as the spoken teaching of Christ and the dark skin of 1:5 as the original sin of the church. They held that allegory alone preserves the holiness of the text [3, 4, 10].

Reply 3. Such allegorization dissolves the historical reality (res) and literary genre of the text. It places the interpreter's speculative ideas over Scripture, and so it violates the ethics of interpretation [8, 46]. As Anthony Thiselton points out, allegory pairs two sets of ideas arbitrarily, whereas genuine typology rests on the organic continuity between two historical events or persons [9, 18]. The human body, sexuality, and emotional intimacy that God created are not sinful in themselves. They are gifts of the created order [5, 11]. Only if the historic Reformed insistence on the sensus literalis, the sense of the literary act, is maintained, and the historical and literary reality of the Song's love is held firmly, does the redemptive agape of Christ's sacrificial union with his bride come into full view [8, 9, 41].

IV. Conclusion: Summary and Dogmatic and Pastoral Implications

1. Summary of Results

This study has read Song of Songs 1:1–17 by integrating grammatico-historical exegesis with Reformed canonical-theological hermeneutics. It reaches three conclusions.

First, the superscription šîr haššîrîm and the woman's active longing (yiššāqēnî, dōḏîm) in 1:1–4 overturn the materialist harem ideology of Solomon's empire. They restore the covenantal subjectivity of Eden and, within the messianic unity of "king and shepherd" grounded in the Davidic covenant, prefigure the unio mystica of Christ and church [19, 20, 27].

Second, the phrases šəḥôrā wənā'wā ("dark but lovely") and karmî šellî ("my own vineyard") in 1:5–6 express a fidelity maintained under social shame and patriarchal oppression. They also proclaim the original dignity of the imago Dei, which neither the Fall nor social disgrace can destroy, and the self-respect of a covenant people [19, 31, 34].

Third, the midday rest, the chariot of Pharaoh, the exotic spices (nard, myrrh, henna), and the green couch and cedar beams of 1:7–17 do not work through isolated code-reading. Together they build a canonical typology in which the one-flesh covenant of Genesis 2:24 is fulfilled in the marriage supper of the Lamb in Ephesians 5 and Revelation 19, as an eschatological alternative sanctuary [17, 23, 42].

2. Theological and Pastoral Implications

Contemporary secular culture faces two opposite distortions of human sexuality and love. Either it commodifies them into a spectrum of material conditions and appearances, or, under the banner of a distorted spirituality, it suppresses bodily life and emotion [2, 11]. Song 1 rejects both errors. God blesses the emotional intimacy of creation and the exclusive fidelity of marriage as holy gifts of the created order [5, 11].

The woman who has darkened under environmental injustice and her brothers' anger, and who nevertheless says "my own vineyard I have kept," speaks a word of comfort to believers who live through the rough currents and social shame of the present age [33]. The worth of a believer does not rest on the comparisons of the world or on outward judgments, the tents of Kedar. It rests on the covenantal assessment that the bridegroom God declares, the curtains of Solomon [33, 34].

The church must therefore refuse the splendid imperial chambers of Solomon. It should go to the midday rest of Jesus Christ, the true shepherd. There it can breathe the air of its mystical union with him every day, and stand before a dark world as a pure bride who releases the fragrance of Christ [23, 28, 41].

Translator's notes for the editor (not part of the manuscript):

1. The Korean draft repeatedly said "1st-century" for the cultural and exegetical setting. The Song is an ancient Near Eastern and Hebrew text of the Iron Age to the Hellenistic period, so I have replaced "1st century" with "ancient Near Eastern / ancient Mediterranean" wherever the date was not specific.

2. Internal revision notes (for example, references to an earlier draft, to a "candidate 1," to a reviewer's criticism, and to a target date for a devotional series) have been removed from the body.

3. Several Hebrew forms in the draft were corrupted by stray Korean characters (for example, bəriḵbê far‘ōh and ’êḵā). They have been restored.

4. The gloss on ‘ōṭiyyâ ("veiled one") as "a prostitute-like figure" has been softened to a note that the connotation is debated, because the lexical evidence does not support a firm gloss.

5. The bibliography section has been omitted, and all [n] markers are preserved as instructed. Several dates and works should be checked against the system's reattached sources before publication (for example, the year and edition of Provan's commentary, Longman's서재 자료, and Garrett's서재 자료. I have not altered them.

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis

The Historical-Grammatical Exegesis and Canonical Typology of Song of Songs 1:1–17: The Messianic Shepherd-King Christology and the Unio Mystica of Redemptive Grace

I. Introduction: The Central Problems of Song of Songs 1:1–17 for Redemptive-Historical Interpretation

1. Background and Purpose

Few books of the Hebrew canon have generated as much hermeneutical strain and dogmatic dispute as the Song of Songs (Shir Hashirim). The name of Yahweh does not occur in the opening chapter, and it appears elsewhere in the book only in the disputed compound of 8:6. The erotic frankness of the lovers' speech also seems to overshadow the reverent religious idiom of the Psalms and the Prophets [1, 2]. Synagogue and church alike have felt the discomfort of this sensuality. Both have repeatedly moved to allegorize the book into an account of spiritual communion [3–5]. Such spiritualizing, however, detaches the text from its first-century historical-grammatical foundation and from the literary conventions of the ancient Near East, which is a serious hermeneutical error [1, 4].

This study examines the opening section, Song of Songs 1:1–17, with the aim of bringing together historical-grammatical exegesis and the canonical typology that runs through the whole of Scripture in a redemptive-historical framework [8–10]. The passage is not simply a secular collection of human love poems. Nor is it an abstract allegory that has drained away the physicality of the text [1, 5, 8]. Song of Songs 1:1–17 proclaims the exclusive covenantal love that humanity was given in Eden (Gen. 1–2) [5, 7]. Through the royal and pastoral care of the Davidic covenant, it leads to the eschatological Unio Mystica between Christ and his church and to the great covenantal mystery of Ephesians 5 [11, 37, 38, 41].

2. The Landscape of Scholarly Debate

The interpretation of Song of Songs 1:1–17 is contested along three main lines.

The first line runs between allegorical spiritualization and a historical-literary reading grounded in creation order. Origen and the patristic and medieval monastic traditions took the "kisses" of 1:2 as the teaching of the incarnate Christ and the "dark skin" of 1:5 as human sinfulness [3, 4, 7]. Gordon Fee, Douglas Stuart, and Tremper Longman III reject such allegory. They read the book within the creation order of Genesis 1–2 as a celebration of the pure and exclusive sexual intimacy and personal union that God grants to a man and a woman [1, 5, 7].

The second line concerns the dramatic structure and the messianic office of the characters. Franz Delitzsch's two-character drama and Iain Provan's three-character drama stand in sharp opposition over the role of Solomon [6, 7]. Provan separates the "king" of 1:4 from the "shepherd" of 1:7 and casts Solomon as a seducer [6, 7]. Iain Duguid and Duane Garrett instead read "king" and "shepherd" as poetic personae that describe a single lover from different angles. On their reading, the book points to the one who is to come, the Shepherd-King, who transcends the limits of historical kings [11–13, 15, 27].

The third line concerns the canonical scope of typology and the application of doctrines of grace. Longman restricts the book to a collection of secular love poems [1]. Bruce Waltke and Kevin Vanhoozer, by contrast, argue from the literal sense (sensus literalis) of the text. They contend that, through the bridegroom's prior acceptance and the imputed love that covers the bride, the believer is brought into a spiritual union with Christ, which is the Unio Mystica. They demonstrate this through canonical biblical hermeneutics (TIS) [10–12, 28–30, 38].

3. Thesis Statements

In order to bring these debates together with the dogmatic critique offered in the preliminary review of this study, the argument rests on three theses, each of which is tested in the body.

  • Thesis 1: The superscription of 1:1 (šîr haššîrîm) and the speaker's confession in 1:2–4 present the book as a song of love that stands at the holy of holies. It does not split the drama into three parts. Rather, it unites the royal authority and the pastoral care of the coming Messiah in a single "Shepherd-King" Christology, which is the office-theological integrity of Christ.
  • Thesis 2: The Hebrew syntax of 1:5–8 (šəḥôrâ wənā’wâ, karmî šellî) does not merely celebrate human self-assertion. In a setting of shame, it bears witness to the ontological glory of the believer, who is justified by the bridegroom's covenantal acceptance and the imputation of beauty (Imputatio), and who is sanctified in that justification (Iustificatio and Sanctificatio).
  • Thesis 3: The image of Pharaoh's chariot, the triad of fragrances (nard, myrrh, henna), and the cosmic sanctuary of green couch and cedar beams in 1:9–17 reveal the redemptive-historical reality of the Unio Mystica. That union is grounded in the inner love of the triune God, and it finds its fulfillment in the eschatological wedding feast of Ephesians 5.

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

This study takes the Masoretic text of Song of Songs 1:1–17 in the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) as its primary source. It gives close attention to superlative constructions, the adversative use of the conjunction waw (wə), and the emphatic double possessive (karmî šellî). The study also tests the intertextual relation of the text to the NA28 Greek New Testament, the LXX, the Reformed orthodox writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (John Calvin, Richard Sibbes, John Owen, and Thomas Durham), and contemporary canonical interpreters (Vanhoozer, Waltke, Duguid).

II. Body: Exegetical and Historical Argument on Song of Songs 1:1–17

Chapter 1 [Establishing Thesis 1]: The Superlative Syntax of Šîr haššîrîm and the Office-Theological Integrity of the Messianic "Shepherd-King" (1:1–4)

1. The Superscription: The Exegetical Hierarchy of Šîr haššîrîm and Lišlōmōh (1:1)

The superscription šîr haššîrîm ’ăšer lišlōmōh (שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים אֲשֶׁר לִשְׁלֹמֹה) is the philological gateway to the book. It fixes the genre and the canonical standing of the work [1–3].

The Hebrew phrase šîr haššîrîm is a plural superlative construct, or genitivus superlativus. It combines the singular construct noun šîr ("song") with the definite article and the plural šîrîm ("songs") [1–3]. Biblical Hebrew often expresses the highest degree of something by pairing a noun with its own plural in the construct state, in place of an adjective [1, 3]. The same syntax governs qōdeš haqŏdāšîm ("the Holy of Holies") and meleḵ hamməlāḵîm ("King of kings"). By this pattern, the book declares itself "the finest of all songs" [1–3].

The superscription also uses the relative pronoun ’ăšer only here. Elsewhere in the book, the form appears only as the short šə [4, 5]. Compare the use of ’ăšer lišlōmōh in 1 Kings 10:28, which refers to Solomon's collection of horses. In that comparison, the preposition lə signals more than simple authorship (lamed auctoris). It places the book within the Solomonic royal tradition and the wisdom rhetoric of ancient Israel [1, 2, 5].

[Superlative syntax of the superscription, 1:1]
שִׁיר (šîr: singular construct noun) + הַשִּׁירִים (haššîrîm: definite plural noun)
└── Superlative construct, comparable to "the Holy of Holies (qōdeš haqŏdāšîm)":
 "the most excellent song"
└── אֲשֶׁר לִשְׁלֹמֹה (’ăšer lišlōmōh): links the book to the Solomonic wisdom tradition

2. The Canonical Integration of the Messianic "Shepherd-King" Office (1:2–4)

Iain Provan's three-character drama separates the "king" of 1:4 from the "shepherd" of 1:7, and in doing so it fragments the narrative. It also damages the Old Testament theology of king and shepherd [6, 7].

In the ancient Near East and in Old Testament theology, "shepherd" is not a term for a rural laborer. It is a title for the ideal king who rules his people with justice (2 Sam. 5:2; Ezek. 34:23) [27, 28, 30]. The historical Solomon failed as a king. He took a thousand wives and fell into apostasy (1 Kgs. 11) [18, 21]. The male lover of the Song, however, is both the majestic "king" and the tender "shepherd" who leads his flock to rest at noon. These two roles are fused into a poetic persona [11–15, 27].

[The messianic Shepherd-King office in canonical perspective]
Song 1:4 "King" (Meleḵ) [majesty, protection]
+ Song 1:7 "Shepherd" (Rō‘eh) [personal pastoral care, rest]
 │
▼ (The failure of historical kings and the messianic expectation of Ezek. 34)
 │
Jesus Christ = "the good shepherd" (John 10:11) and "King of kings" (Rev. 19:16),
 the threefold office (Munus Triplex)

In 1:2, the phrase yiššāqēnî minnəšîqôt pîhû ("Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth") uses the plural intensive noun dôdîm for "love." The word means more than abstract affection. It refers to close, personal physical intimacy [20, 21]. The paronomastic play between šemen ("oil") and šem ("name") in 1:3 praises the bridegroom's name and his honorable person [21].

The confession of 1:4, "The king has brought me into his chambers" (hĕḇî’anî hammeleḵ ḥăḏārāyw), should not be read as the fall of the bride into a secular harem [8]. The verse depicts the bride being drawn gladly into the exalted rest of the king who is also the shepherd, and running after him (nārûṣā). It portrays a story of holy grace that centers on the Messiah [8, 11, 20].

Chapter 2 [Establishing Thesis 2]: The Syntax of Šəḥôrâ wənā’wâ and the Soteriological Imputation of Justification and Sanctification (1:5–8)

1. Šəḥôrâ wənā’wâ and the Soteriological Paradox of the Adversative Waw (1:5)

The Shulammite woman addresses the daughters of Jerusalem, that is, the women of the court. She declares her own appearance and worth:

> שְׁחוֹרָה אֲנִי וְנָאָוָה בְּנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָם כָּאָהֳלֵי קֵדָר כִּירִיעוֹת שְׁלֹמֹה > "I am dark but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon." (1:5, author's translation)

The decisive syntactic point is the function of the conjunction waw (wə). Some read it as simple coordination ("dark and beautiful"). In the rhetorical setting, where the woman answers a look of contempt, it is better read as an adversative or concessive waw (Waw Adversativum / Concessivum): "I am dark, yet lovely" [22, 23].

[Adversative construction and soteriological structure in 1:5]
שְׁחוֹרָה (šəḥôrâ: dark; shame and servile labor) ──> the tents of Kedar (kə’āhŏlê qēḏār: goat-hair tents of the desert)
 │
▼ [וְ (wə: yet [adversative]); the bridegroom's prior acceptance and imputed love]
 │
נָאָוָה (nā’wā: lovely; ontological glory) ──> the curtains of Solomon (kîrî‘ôt šəlōmōh: linen of the royal court)

The woman compares her outward appearance to the black tents of Kedar, made of goat hair and weathered by desert winds. She declares that her inner worth is like the embroidered curtains of Solomon's palace [22–24].

Calvin's dogmatic critique, as pressed in the preliminary review of this study, points the way. The verse is not an Enlightenment celebration of self-assertion [10, 11]. A person whose existence is shamed under the harsh influence of sin and the Fall, like the dark tents of Kedar, receives through the unconditional acceptance and love of the bridegroom the beauty and dignity of Solomon's curtains. This is the imputation of beauty (Imputation of Beauty). It is the forensic justification (Iustificatio forensis) of the Old Testament, and it reflects the paradox of simul iustus et peccator (at once righteous and sinner) [10, 22].

2. The Emphatic Double Possessive Karmî šellî and the Covenantal Fidelity of Sanctification (1:6–8)

In verse 6, the woman explains why she has become darkened (šəḥarḥōreṯ):

> אַל־תִּרְאֻנִי שֶׁאֲנִי שְׁחַרְחֹרֶת שֶׁשֱּׁזָפַתְנִי הַשָּׁמֶשׁ בְּנֵי אִמִּי נַחֲרוּ־בִי שָׂמֻנִי נֹטֵרָה אֶת־הַכְּרָמִים כַּרְמִי שֶׁלִּי לֹא נָטָרְתִּי > "Do not stare at me because I am dark, because the sun has scorched me. My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I have not kept." (1:6, author's translation)

Her half-brothers ("my mother's sons") forced her into labor [23, 24]. Yet she confesses, "my own vineyard" (karmî šellî) [24].

The Hebrew karmî šellî is an emphatic double possessive. It combines the possessive suffix (-î) with the relative possessive šellî. The construction stresses that although others forced her to labor and her outward skin was darkened, her purity, her personhood, and her exclusive sexual agency, which is "my own vineyard," remained hers and were not taken from her. The verse testifies to the holy covenantal resolve of sanctification (Sanctificatio) [10, 23, 24].

In verse 7, the woman asks for a resting place where the flock lies down at noon (baṣṣāhŏrāyim). It is a place of soteriological rest (Sabbath), where she can be close to the true shepherd, away from the noisy labor and the surveillance of the world [13, 23, 24].

Chapter 3 [Establishing Thesis 3]: The Triad of Fragrances (Nard, Myrrh, Henna) and the Cosmic Sanctuary as the Fulfillment of Unio Mystica (1:9–17)

1. The Chariot Image and the Subversion of Materialism (1:9–11)

In verse 9, the male lover compares the woman to "a mare among the chariots of Pharaoh" (ləsusāṯî bərāḵəḇê far‘ōh) [14, 25]. Marvin Pope read the image as a disruption of military chariot warfare. In context, however, it refers to the finest jewel-adorned horses that drew the private royal chariot of Pharaoh [14]. The author takes the imperial and military splendor of Pharaoh's chariot and reuses it. The lover's sincere covenantal devotion now adorns the bride's simple beauty with honor [14, 16].

2. The Triad of Fragrances and the Redemptive-Historical Reality of Unio Mystica (1:12–14) (Candidate 1, adopted)

The triad of fragrances in 1:12–14 portrays the personal and spiritual mutual indwelling (perichoresis) of bridegroom and bride [25–30].

[Triad of fragrances in 1:12–14 and the Trinitarian structure of Unio Mystica]
1:12 Nard oil (nērd) ──> Eucharistic fellowship at the king's table (mesav)
and the pure devotion of the believer (Mark 14:3)
1:13 Myrrh sachet (ṣərôr hammōr) ──> Christ dwelling within "between my breasts"
and his atoning suffering (John 19:39)
1:14 Henna cluster (kōfer) ──> The living vitality of the oasis at En-gedi
and the pure joy of new creation redemption
  • Nard oil (nērd), 1:12. "While the king was at his table, my nard gave forth its fragrance" [25, 27, 30]. The word mesav refers to a round banquet table or a couch on which people recline [27, 30]. It signifies the spiritual feast to which Christ invites his people through word and sacrament. The believer answers with the fragrance of gratitude and devotion, like Mary's alabaster jar of nard (Mark 14:3) [26, 27, 30].
  • Myrrh sachet (ṣərôr hammōr), 1:13. "My beloved is to me a sachet of myrrh, lying all night between my breasts" [25, 28]. The myrrh bag keeps the lover's scent close during separation. It acts as a representative of presence [28]. The image points to the atoning suffering of the cross (John 19:39) and to the indwelling of Christ in the believer's inmost heart, that is, the Inhabitatio Christi [26, 28].
  • Henna cluster (kōfer), 1:14. "My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms in the vineyards of En-gedi" [25, 29, 30]. The white and fragrant henna that blooms at the oasis of En-gedi by the Dead Sea stands for the redemptive life of Christ, who makes the soul of the believer flower in the middle of a barren world [29].

This triad of fragrances fully demonstrates the doctrine of Unio Mystica, a central teaching of Reformed orthodoxy (Richard Sibbes, John Owen): "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" (Song 2:16) [11, 29, 31, 38].

3. The Dove's Eyes and the Cosmic Sanctuary: The Eschatological Restoration of Eden (1:15–17)

In 1:15–17, the two lovers praise each other's beauty and enter a sanctuary of nature [25, 31]. Their couch is not Solomon's artificial gold bed. It is "the green place" (‘arśēnû ra‘ănānâ). The beams of the house are cedar (’ărāzîm), and the rafters are cypress (bərôṯîm) [25].

Solomon built an artificial temple (1 Kgs. 6). By contrast, the two lovers take the created world itself as their sanctuary [5, 7, 34]. In the light of Kevin Vanhoozer's speech-act theory [29–31], this spatial metaphor restores the original purity of Eden in Genesis 2, before the Fall. It also prefigures, in canonical terms, the wedding feast of the Lamb and the New Jerusalem as temple, which will be fully realized in Ephesians 5:31–32 and Revelation 19–21 [36–38, 41, 42].

III. Objections and Responses

This section gives explicit replies to three objections, each from a respected line of scholarship, against the redemptive-historical typology and the historical-grammatical exegesis of Song of Songs 1:1–17.

1. Objection 1: Patristic Allegorism (Origen and Others) and Ahistorical Spiritualization

  • The objection: Origen and medieval monastic interpreters objected that a literal reading of the bodily and sexual language of chapter 1 is carnal. They held that the "kisses" of 1:2 must be read as the teaching of Christ that surpasses the law, and that the "dark skin" of 1:5 must be read as the sin of the church. For them, such one-to-one correspondences alone preserve the holiness of the canon [3, 4, 7].
  • The response: Such allegorization risks a Gnostic dualism that denies the goodness of creation (Gen. 1:31) and the holiness of the body [5, 7]. An allegory that removes the first-order literal sense (sensus literalis), that is, the pure love between a husband and a wife, is arbitrary speculation [8, 9, 14–17]. The redemptive-historical typology (Typology) established by the Antiochene school and Reformed orthodoxy (Calvin, Sibbes, Durham) is clearly distinct from allegory [8–10, 16, 21]. Typology rests on the historical reality (res) of the text and on the goodness of creation. Within the canonical context of Scripture, it extends naturally to the union of Christ and the church. It is a legitimate redemptive-historical analogy [8–10, 37, 38].

2. Objection 2: The Extreme Three-Character Drama (Iain Provan) and the Fragmentation of the Narrative

  • The objection: Provan argues that the "king" of 1:4 and the "shepherd" of 1:7 are two conflicting figures. He reads the whole book as a three-way love triangle in which the bride resists the sensual harem of Solomon and keeps her fidelity to a rustic shepherd lover, that is, an anti-Solomonic moral drama [6, 7].
  • The response: The three-character drama imports into the text a complicated plot that the text does not contain. It also fragments the redemptive-historical theology of the king-shepherd Messiah in the Old Testament [6, 11, 27]. As Duguid and Garrett have shown, "king" and "shepherd" are poetic personae that describe one lover from different angles [11–13, 16]. In the canonical structure of Israel, the union of king and shepherd points forward to the Davidic covenant (2 Sam. 7) and to the messianic prophecy of Ezekiel 34. Both are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the true "King and good shepherd," who holds the threefold office (Munus Triplex) [11, 15, 26, 27, 35]. This integration is a sophisticated theological rhetoric, not a narrative flaw.

3. Objection 3: The Secularist and Naturalist Reading as a Collection of Secular Poems (Tremper Longman III)

  • The objection: Longman argues that the Song contains no canonical typological connection and no unified redemptive-historical purpose. He regards it as an anthology of independent, secular love poems that parallel ancient Near Eastern love songs [1].
  • The response: Longman's approach helped overcome allegorism. However, it neglects canonical hermeneutics, which places the Song within the final canonical form of the wisdom literature of the Tanakh [17, 19, 21]. Scripture is not a list of unrelated secular poems. It is the integrated revelatory space of the triune God [26, 28, 29]. Genesis 2:24, the covenant of marriage, is named in Ephesians 5:31–32 as "a great mystery" (mysterion) concerning Christ and the church. In the same way, the pure covenantal love of Song 1 points, within the canonical whole, to the eschatological union of Christ and the church as a holy type [37, 38, 41, 42].

IV. Conclusion: Summary and Implications

1. Summary of Findings

This study has combined first-century historical-grammatical exegesis, canonical typology, and the dogmatic critique offered in the preliminary review. It reaches the following conclusions.

First, the superscription šîr haššîrîm in 1:1–4 is a superlative construction on the scale of the Holy of Holies. The "king" of 1:4 and the "shepherd" of 1:7 are not rivals in a three-character drama. They form a typological unity that embraces the royal authority and pastoral care of Christ in the messianic threefold office of the Shepherd-King [1, 11, 15, 27].

Second, the Hebrew syntax of 1:5–8, šəḥôrâ wənā’wâ ("dark yet lovely") and karmî šellî ("my own vineyard"), bears witness to the forensic justification (Iustificatio) and sanctification (Sanctificatio) that believers receive in the ontological glory of the bridegroom's prior acceptance and imputed beauty (Imputatio), even in a setting of shame [10, 22, 24].

Third, in 1:9–17, the image of Pharaoh's chariot, the sensory fellowship of the triad of fragrances (nard, myrrh, henna), and the cosmic sanctuary of green couch and cedar beams together reveal the Unio Mystica grounded in the inner love of the triune God. They also fulfill, within the canon, the eschatological wedding feast of Ephesians 5 and Revelation 19 [26–30, 38, 41].

2. Theological and Pastoral Implications

The passage Song of Songs 1:1–17 speaks a deep theological and pastoral word to the contemporary church.

A secularized culture reduces human sexuality and love to commodities. Other movements, in the name of spirituality, drain the body of its life. Between these two extremes, Song 1 declares that the affections of creation and the intimacy of marriage are holy gifts of the Creator [1, 5, 7].

Moreover, a believer who, amid the shame and weariness of the world, like the dark tents of Kedar, can say "my own vineyard I have kept," stands in the prior love of Christ the bridegroom and in the imputed righteousness that is given to her. Such a believer must resist the Canaanite temptations of the imperial age and keep holy spiritual fidelity [10, 21, 24]. Leaving the luxurious royal bed of empire, and resting on the green couch under the cedar beams of creation, the believer enjoys the Unio Mystica with the true King and Shepherd. This song of love is a holy invitation. It calls the church today toward an eternal covenantal fellowship with Jesus Christ, the true Bridegroom from heaven [11, 26, 38, 42].

Translator's notes (not part of the manuscript; for the author's review)

1. The preface titled as the Erasmus candidate evaluation was omitted because it is process metadata rather than part of the paper.

2. The Sources/References section was not written, as instructed. Bracketed numbers [n] are preserved exactly as in the draft and must be checked against the verified bibliography.

3. Divine name: the draft says the name of God "does not appear directly" in the book. Since šalheḇetyāh in 8:6 contains the element Yah, I wrote that the divine name occurs only once, in that disputed compound. Please confirm this against BHS.

4. "Calvin" in the draft refers to an internal reviewer, not necessarily John Calvin. I rendered this as "the preliminary review of this study." If John Calvin the Reformer is meant, the claim needs a proper citation.

5. The internal scheduling reference (the October 24,서재 자료 was removed from the conclusion, since it does not belong in an academic publication.

6. All Hebrew verse renderings are my own English translations, offered as a working base. They should be checked against the source texts before publication.

(Literature Matrix)

(Origen)

(Commentary on the Song of Songs)

(Franz Delitzsch)

  • 문헌: 『Commentary on the Song of Songs』 (또는 한글 번역 인용구)

(Tremper Longman III)

The Song of Songs (NICOT)

4. 브루스 K. 왈트키 (Bruce K. Waltke)

(Iain Provan)

Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (NIVAC)

(Gordon Fee & Douglas Stuart)

III. (Objections and Rebuttals)

(The Finest of All Songs)"임을 선언합니다 [32, 33].

Dôḏîm (1:2–4)

KJV나 단순 번역본들은 이를 단순합성 접속사("I am black and comely")로 취했으나, 문맥상 예루살렘 딸들의 멸시 어린 시선에 대한 방어적 변호이므로 역접 접속사("I am black, but comely")로 번역해야 마땅합니다 [41, 45].

III. (Academic Refutation & Response)

(Calvin, Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology) 대상 원고: 신약학 연구자(N.T.

III.

III.
