Covenantal Fellowship and Fictive Kinship: A Redemptive-Historical Recovery of James 5:13–20
Anointing, Mutual Discipline, and Providential Prayer Reconsidered within a Reformed Dogmatic Framework
I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Theological Center of James's Closing Passage
1. Background and Aim
James 5:13–20 gathers the pastoral and eschatological exhortations of the whole letter into a closing passage. Its addressees were a diaspora Jewish-Christian community living under the patron-client structures of the Roman Empire. They faced the exploitation of landowning elites (Jas 5:1–6) and the social marginalization that came with it, together with bodily and spiritual sickness [189_deSilva_PerseveranceInGratitude_Eerdmans_2000]. In the face of this crisis James refuses resignation. He calls the community to prayer, summons the elders, and urges mutual restoration. In doing so he invokes a holy covenant fellowship held together by solidarity.
The history of interpretation, however, has often detached the passage from its redemptive-historical horizon. Medieval scholastic theology and the Council of Trent (1551) took the text as the scriptural warrant for extreme unction (sacramentum extremae unctionis), a rite that cleansed the guilt of the dying and so placed the passage within a sacerdotal system of absolution [Dan G. McCartney - James (Baker Exegetical - Dan G. McCartney]. Modern historical-critical and secular medical-historical readings have gone the other way. They reduced the elders' anointing to ordinary folk medicine in the ancient Mediterranean, or they flattened the link between hidden sin and sickness into a mechanical causality. The Elijah example has also been enlisted for a synergism that leans toward Pelagianism, as if human zeal or moral excellence produced the miracle.
This study aims to bring recent New Testament criticism (including the critical suggestions of N. T. Wright), Second Temple Jewish literature (Sirach, 4 Ezra, and the Qumran Community Rule, 1QS), and sociological theories of identity into one account. Its goal is to establish James 5:13–20 within an integrated Reformed dogmatic framework. Three elements carry the argument. The anointing is an abiding form of ecclesial care, not a sacrament for the dying. Mutual forgiveness and perseverance are carried out within a fictive kinship community, which serves as an external means of grace. Prayer is understood as providential cooperation (concursus divinus) with a judgment-laden, apocalyptic, and anti-imperial edge.
2. The Map of the Scholarly Debate
The central questions of the passage are contested on three fronts.
The first concerns the nature of the anointing (aleiphantes elaiō, v. 14) and whether its significance has ceased. The Roman Catholic tradition, following Trent, read the passage as grounding the permanent sacrament of extreme unction. The classical Reformed tradition, Calvin among others, tended to confine the anointing to a temporary sign of the apostolic gift of healing (gratia curationum), and that move reduced its validity for the present church. Recent exegesis by Craig L. Blomberg, Douglas J. Moo, and Dan G. McCartney has changed the picture. Through the lexical contrast between aleiphō and chriō, and through the syntax of the participle aleipsantes subordinated to the main verb proseuxasthōsan, they argue that the anointing is neither a magical healing technique nor a temporary charismatic product. It is a symbolic commitment of the sick member to God's covenantal presence and to the church's holistic pastoral care [James - Craig L. Blomberg, TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
The second concerns where the term "righteous" (dikaios) belongs in soteriology. If the passage is read only through the Pauline lens of forensic justification (iustificatio sola fide), the "prayer of the righteous" in v. 16 can look like the religious merit of an abstract righteous person. Read within the whole letter, and with the fictive kinship research of Paul Trebilco and David A. deSilva, James's "righteous" is more than a recipient of an imputed righteousness in the Pauline sense. The term names the concrete bearer of covenant faithfulness (emunah), who keeps right relation with God under imperial economic exploitation (5:1–6), and whose faithfulness shows itself in deeds [111_Trebilco_SelfDesignationsGroupIdentity, 154_deSilva_HonorPatronageKinship].
The third concerns the reading of the Elijah tradition and the holding together of providential and apocalyptic tensions. If Elijah's prayer is explained only as a secondary cause (causa secunda) in the scholastic sense, the socioeconomic reality of exploitation by landowners allied with Rome (5:1–6) disappears. Daniel Stökl Ben Ezra and the apocalyptic sources (4 Ezra 7:109; Sirach 48) connect the Elijah rain tradition with Day of Atonement intercession and with the eschatological period of three and a half years. On this reading, drought and rain become signs of God's eschatological overturning of unjust imperial power. God dries up the foundations of that power and restores his covenant people [The Impact of Yom Kippur on Early Christianity].
3. Thesis Propositions
The argument rests on three propositions.
Proposition 1 (Sacramental and Pastoral Anointing). The anointing in James 5:14 (aleiphantes elaiō) is neither Tridentine extreme unction nor a temporary sign that ceased. It is an abiding, communal, pastoral act that accompanies the prayer of faith and sets apart the weary and sick member under the church's public care and the presence of God.
Proposition 2 (Ecclesiology and Fictive Kinship). The mutual confession of sin (v. 16) and the restoration of the wanderer (vv. 19–20) are the redemptive-historical responsibility of a fictive kinship community. That community goes beyond both sacerdotal confession and Qumranic exclusion. Its mutual care is an external means (media externa) by which God accomplishes the perseverance of the saints.
Proposition 3 (Providence and Apocalyptic Overturning). The Elijah rain tradition in vv. 16b–18 is not confined to the secondary causes of an abstract doctrine of providence. It is a sign of apocalyptic and subversive judgment directed at the imperial structures described in 5:1–6. It is also a channel of providential cooperation (concursus divinus), through which justified believers, living in covenant faithfulness, help move history toward God's purposes.
4. Scope and Exegetical Focus
The primary text is the NA28 Greek of James 5:13–20. The study analyzes the syntactic hierarchy of the key lexemes: aleiphō, chriō, euchē, deēsis, energoumenē, homoiopathēs, and epistrephō. It also compares the passage with 1 Corinthians 11 (divisions at the Lord's Supper) and Hebrews 13 (the rule of hospitality). These intertextual comparisons clarify what practical solidarity looks like within a fictive kinship community.
II. Body: Three Propositions in Dogmatic Argument
Chapter 1. Overcoming Sacramental Misuse and Re-establishing the Abiding Pastoral Anointing (5:13–15)
1.1 Syntactic Hierarchy and the Lexical Distinction between aleiphō and chriō
The structure of v. 14 defines the church's formal ministry in response to a sick person's call:
> "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord" (proseuxasthōsan ep' auton aleipsantes elaiō en tō onomati tou kyriou).
The main verb is the third-person plural aorist imperative proseuxasthōsan, "let them pray." In McCartney's analysis, an aorist participle that accompanies an imperative main verb typically marks attendant circumstance or means [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)]. The purpose of the elders' visit, and the core of the healing ministry, is prayer. The anointing gives concrete, symbolic form to that prayer and is secondary to it [James - Craig L. Blomberg].
In the New Testament vocabulary, the verb for messianic or cultic consecration is chriō [1]. James, however, chose aleiphō [2]. As Douglas J. Moo observes, aleiphō in the Septuagint and in Greek literature generally denotes the physical act of rubbing with oil for bodily care, hygiene, and the treatment of wounds [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. Yet in this passage the elders are summoned to pray over the sick person while applying the oil. That act cannot be flattened into a common surgical prescription [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
Wright's criticism is persuasive on this point. The cessationist scheme that Reformed interpreters inherited from the sixteenth-century debate with Rome need not be projected back onto first-century house-church practice in order to read the text. The anointing is therefore neither a magical rite nor the sacrament of extreme unction [Dan G. McCartney - James (Baker Exegetical - Dan G. McCartney]. It is also not a temporary sign that disappeared when the apostolic age ended. It is a visible mark of the abiding, communal, pastoral care of the church, in which the weakened member (ho kamnōn) is set apart under the church's public care and under the Lord's presence [James - Craig L. Blomberg, TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
1.2 Sickness, Sin, and the Integration of Second Temple Purity Theology
The second half of v. 15 raises a further problem: "And if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him" (kan hamartias ē pepoiēkōs, aphethēsetai autō). The concessive particle kan (kai ean) forms a third-class condition. The clause therefore blocks any mechanical doctrine of retribution that would tie each illness to a specific sin [James - Craig L. Blomberg].
Jonathan Klawans and Martha Himmelfarb have shown that Second Temple Jewish communities, including the Qumran groups, fused moral impurity with ritual impurity. Unrepented hidden sin and division within the community were thought to issue directly in spiritual and bodily contamination [A008 Himmelfarb서재 자료. James takes up this background and reshapes it by grace. Sickness is not in itself condemnation. In a fallen existence, however, it may be bound up with personal deception or with communal division. The church's covenantal intercession brings about an integrated restoration in which bodily healing (sōsei, egerei) and the forgiveness of sin (aphethēsetai) take place together [1acw4ME1st-m3aQYxE2D0rZcJr03U9XsH].
Chapter 2. Fictive Kinship, Mutual Forgiveness, and Perseverance as an External Means (5:16, 19–20)
2.1 Exomologeisthe allēlois and the Mutual Intercession of the Priesthood of Believers
At v. 16 James moves from the sickbed to the whole congregation and states a general principle:
> "Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed" (exomologeisthe oun allēlois tas hamartias kai euchesthe hyper allēlōn, hopōs iathēte).
The present middle imperative exomologeisthe calls for an ongoing, shared practice of disclosing one's failures within the community, which breaks open self-protective silence [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)]. The reciprocal pronoun allēlois places the act of confession among believers on a footing of equality. The text therefore rejects both the Roman confessio auricularis and hierarchical sacerdotalism [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)].
Early Christian communities, as Bruce J. Malina has shown, formed fictive kinship groups in which God was regarded as Father and in which bonds went beyond blood [111_Trebilco_SelfDesignationsGroupIdentity, 236_Malina_PortraitsOfPaul_Part2]. James's repeated address, adelphoi ("brothers and sisters"), dismantles the vertical and competitive honor models of the surrounding society. It establishes a horizontal family in which members care for one another as equals [111_Trebilco_SelfDesignationsGroupIdentity, 154_deSilva_HonorPatronageKinship]. John M. G. Barclay observes that this mutual care, including material sharing, worked as a "symbolic clamp" that held together a diaspora community under economic pressure [105_Barclay_ReceptionJewishTradition].
2.2 Overcoming Qumranic Exclusion and the External Means of Perseverance
The mutual confession and turning back of the brother in James stands in contrast to the strict judicial and exclusionary discipline of the Qumran community, as set out in the Community Rule (1QS) [156_GarciaMartinez_DSSE]. Qumran expelled the defiled permanently in order to protect the purity of Torah. James's new covenant community goes after the lost sheep and seeks their return. Its discipline is pastoral and restorative [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)].
Dogmatically, vv. 19–20 connect with the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints (perseverantia sanctorum). Wright reads the "death" (thanatos) in the passage as eschatological condemnation, a warning of existential catastrophe [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. The Canons of Dort (V.14) teach that God does not lead the saints to perseverance by fatalistic detachment. He works through the external means (media externa) of loving mutual correction and exhortation among believers [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)]. On this reading, bringing a wanderer back from death does not imply that salvation can be lost. It is a glorious means of redemption, in which God's unchangeable decree is carried out through the fellowship of the saints.
Chapter 3. Concursus Divinus and the Apocalyptic, Anti-Imperial Elijah Tradition (5:16b–18)
3.1 Deēsis dikaiou energoumenē and the Doctrine of Providence
The second half of v. 16 declares the effectiveness of prayer:
> "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working" (polly ischyei deēsis dikaiou energoumenē).
On the syntax of the participle energoumenē, the combined verdict of Wright's criticism and Wallace's grammar is that the word does not describe the psychological enthusiasm of the one praying [James - Craig L. Blomberg]. It is better read as a divine passive (passivum divinum), in which God is the one who activates and energizes the prayer [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
Within the Reformed doctrine of providence, the concept of cooperation (concursus divinus) holds that God as first cause (causa prima) does not suppress the free activity of creatures. God uses prayer as a second cause, ordained to carry out his grace [3]. The "righteous" (dikaios) is not only someone who has received forensic justification. This is the person who lives the covenant faithfulness that James 2 shows to be demonstrated through works [REC59. James - Daniel M. Doriani]. The prayer of the justified person is not autonomous merit. Under the Spirit's prompting, it becomes a channel through which God's providential cooperation moves history [REC59. James - Daniel M. Doriani].
3.2 Restoring the Apocalyptic and Anti-Imperial Context of the Elijah Tradition
Wright is right to warn that if vv. 17–18 are reduced to the secondary causes of an abstract doctrine of providence, the historical substance of the passage disappears. That substance is the exploitation carried out by landowners allied with Rome (5:1–6). Three features of the text bear this out.
First, the "three years and six months" differs from 1 Kings 18:1, which speaks of the "third year." James's figure matches the apocalyptic period of "a time, times, and half a time" in Daniel 7:25 and 12:7, a symbolic span of eschatological tribulation and persecution [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. The suffering under Roman imperial oppression is thus located within the eschatological tribulation itself, and the readers are reminded of it [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
Second, rain was the basis of life in ancient Palestinian agrarian society. The placement of the Elijah narrative directly after the account of landowners who withheld the wages of laborers and condemned the righteous poor (5:1–6) is significant [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. Elijah's shutting and opening of heaven becomes a sign of God's eschatological judgment and overturning. It dries the foundations of unjust power allied with empire and restores the poor [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
III. Objections and Responses
1. Objection One: The Sacramental Permanence and Sacerdotalism of the Anointing (5:14)
The objection. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions hold that James 5:14 institutes a permanent sacrament, extreme unction, to be administered by the priest (presbyter) as a church office.
Response. In the New Testament, presbyteros refers to an elder who shepherds and governs the congregation. It does not refer to a sacrificing priest (sacerdos) [Dan G. McCartney - James (Zondervan Academic, 2009)]. In v. 16 the act of intercession extends from the elders to "one another" (allēlōn). That extension shows that the power of healing is not monopolized by a priestly class [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. The anointing is therefore not extreme unction, and it is not a temporary sign that ceased with the apostolic age. It is the church's abiding, communal, pastoral care for the suffering member, expressed as a symbolic commitment [James - Craig L. Blomberg, TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
2. Objection Two: The Concept of "Righteous" (dikaios) Conflicts with Pauline Justification
The objection. Some critics argue that emphasizing the "righteous" man in James 5 and the effectiveness of his prayer contradicts the Pauline doctrine of justification by grace through faith alone, and that it introduces works-righteousness.
Response. This objection sets the theologies of Paul and James against each other as if they were opposed. In James the righteous person did not win righteousness through personal moral merit. He is one brought into right covenant relation with God by Christ's grace, which is justification. The reality of that relation is publicly shown through works and through covenant faithfulness (emunah) [REC59. James - Daniel M. Doriani]. The prayer of the righteous is therefore not the utterance of autonomous merit. It is a channel of providential cooperation in which the justified believer, in the Spirit, prays in line with God's will [REC59. James - Daniel M. Doriani].
3. Objection Three: Explaining the Warning of Apostasy and Restoration (19–20) through the Perseverance of the Saints Eases the Existential Tension of the Text
The objection. To bring the warning of "death" and the danger of apostasy in vv. 19–20 under the Reformed doctrine of the perseverance of the saints softens the urgency that the first readers would have felt.
Response. Reformed soteriology does not understand perseverance as fatalistic license. As the Canons of Dort affirm, when God preserves the saints he actively employs the external means of loving correction and mutual exhortation within the community [TNTC James - Douglas Moo]. The warning therefore forces believers to face the real possibility of existential catastrophe. At the same time it makes the community's costly redemptive duty to pull one another out of spiritual death impossible to ignore [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
IV. Conclusion: Redemptive-Historical Synthesis and the Existential Implications for the Church
This study has argued that James 5:13–20 is not a fragmented set of instructions for healing or a set of abstract moral exhortations. It is a substantial ecclesiological and providential declaration. It shows how an eschatological community of faith should embody God's rule under Rome's exploitation and the pressures of the surrounding world.
First, the elders' anointing and prayer overcome both the superstition of Tridentine extreme unction and the reductionism that treats the rite as a temporary sign. They restore sickness and suffering to a sacred place where the church's abiding pastoral care and God's presence meet [James - Craig L. Blomberg, TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
Second, the passage sets aside the closed exclusionism of Qumran. In its place it establishes a fictive kinship community, marked by mutual confession and forgiveness and by a restorative love for the brother who has gone astray. That ethic is an essential mark of the church. It functions as God's covenantal external means for bringing the saints to perseverance [111_Trebilco_SelfDesignationsGroupIdentity, TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
Third, the Elijah tradition is an apocalyptic sign that judges and unsettles unjust imperial power. It also confirms that justified believers, through covenant faithfulness, become a channel of providential cooperation (concursus divinus) and of the second cause through which history moves [TNTC James - Douglas Moo].
The contemporary church, weighed down by materialism, individualism, and spiritual fragmentation, needs to listen to James's stern and tender voice. When suffering comes, the church prays. When illness comes, it seeks the church's public care. Its members confess their failures to one another and bring back the brother or sister who has strayed from death. That recovery of a fictive kinship community is the most forceful witness of the gospel that a church living in the last days can offer the world [TNTC James - Douglas Moo, 111_Trebilco_SelfDesignationsGroupIdentity].

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis
Historical-Grammatical Exegesis and Covenantal Solidarity in James 5:13–20: Christological Sovereignty, Providential Concurrence, and the Communion of Saints
I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Dogmatic Center of James's Final Passage
1. Background and Purpose
James 5:13–20 forms the closing section of the letter, where its theological insight and pastoral exhortation reach their height. The letter is addressed to a diaspora Jewish-Christian community on the margins of the Roman Empire, a community caught between economic exploitation (5:1–6), social discrimination (2:1–7), and internal division (4:1–12). Into this overlapping set of crises James speaks of illness and suffering, sin and seduction, and proposes an alternative order for the community. Yet the history of the church and of scholarship has often reduced this passage. It has been treated as a fragmentary manual of spiritual discipline, as a warrant for prosperity-minded healing prayer, or as a sacramental text that justifies the medieval Roman Catholic sacrament of extreme unction (sacramentum extremae unctionis).
This study reads James 5:13–20 closely in light of Greek syntax, the liturgical and apocalyptic literature of Second Temple Judaism (Sirach, 4 Ezra, the Qumran Serekh, the Yom Kippur liturgy), and the social history of early Christianity, particularly the honor-shame and patron-client systems that James's readers inhabited and that the letter subverts. It also engages systematic theology. The aim is to show that the passage does more than imitate Old Testament cultic patterns or take a side in the sixteenth-century sacramental dispute. It establishes three things: the Christological sovereignty of the risen high priest, the providential concurrence (concursus divinus) of God's decree and human prayer, and the communion of saints as a media externa through which the perseverance of believers is accomplished.
2. Scholarly Debates and the Current Landscape
Four axes of debate frame the current study of this passage in New Testament scholarship and dogmatics.
The first concerns the nature of the anointing with oil (ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ, v. 14). R. C. H. Lenski (1938) and Charles Swindoll (2011) point out that aleiphō was used for ordinary medical care and confine the act to folk medicine.1 The Roman Catholic tradition, following the Council of Trent (1551), turned the text into a dogma of a priestly sacrament of forgiveness that cannot be repeated. Douglas J. Moo (2015) and Craig L. Blomberg (2009) respond that the main verb is "let them pray" (προσευξάσθωσαν), and that the participle aleiphantes describes an accompanying action. On this reading the anointing is a symbolic act by which the sick person is set apart and entrusted to God's care.2 This study builds on that reading. It guards against a neo-sacerdotalism that would read the anointing as a continuation of Old Testament priestly ordination, and it establishes the act as a non-sacerdotal pastoral commendation with roots in synagogue elder traditions.
The second concerns the phrase "in the name of the Lord" (ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου, v. 14) and the Christological mediation it implies. Dan G. McCartney (2009) and Richard Bauckham (1999) connect the phrase with the "good name" invoked over believers in 2:7 and argue that the "Lord" of 5:14 is the exalted Jesus Christ, whose divine identity is affirmed within an early form of Christological monotheism.3 This reading guards against a "Christological vacuum" that could arise if prayer were modeled too closely on Second Temple Yom Kippur or charismatic-righteous traditions. It also shows that the church's prayer rests on the once-for-all high-priestly office of Christ, completed in his cross and resurrection (Solus Christus).
The third concerns the syntax of "the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person" (δέησις δικαίου ... ἐνεργουμένη, v. 16b). Moo and McCartney take the participle energoumenē as a middle voice and render it "as it works" or "when it is effective in its working."4 Blomberg and Ralph P. Martin (1988) read it as a divine passive, "when it is energized by God," with God or the Spirit as the causal agent.5 This study combines the two syntactic readings. It rules out any autonomous meritorious prayer, and it shows that the believer's prayer is a second cause (causa secunda) through which God's eternal decree is realized in history. This is the sense of concursus divinus.
The fourth concerns the tension between the warning against apostasy (vv. 19–20) and the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. Arminian interpreters argue that the believer may finally fall away from salvation, while some scholastic Reformed interpreters have tended to weaken the passage into rhetorical exhortation. Peter H. Davids (1982) and Daniel M. Doriani (2007) show that the citation of Proverbs 10:12 points to God's full forgiveness.6 This study extends the framework of the Canons of Dort (5.14) with exegetical evidence and argues that the brotherly correction and restoration practiced by the church is the covenantal media externa by which God brings the perseverance of believers to completion in history.
3. Presuppositions and Thesis Propositions
Across these debates, the study argues four propositions:
- [Proposition 1: Sacramental and Ecclesiological] The anointing with oil in James 5:14 (ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ) is neither a medieval extreme unction nor a priestly succession from Levitical cult. It is a non-sacerdotal, pastoral symbolic act, and a visible sign of grace, that accompanies the main verb "pray in faith" and entrusts the suffering member to God's covenantal care.
- [Proposition 2: Christological and Liturgical] The prayer of the passage does not simply imitate the Second Temple Yom Kippur liturgy or charismatic-righteous traditions. Its efficacy comes from union with the saving work and intercession of the exalted high priest, that is, from the name of the Lord, the name of Jesus Christ.
- [Proposition 3: Providential and Syntactic] The participle ἐνεργουμένη in 5:16b is a divine passive, indicating that prayer is energized by the Holy Spirit. It also implies a participatory dynamic in which the believer takes part in divine action. Prayer thus functions as a second cause (causa secunda) in the concurrence by which God's unchanging decree is accomplished in the present.
- [Proposition 4: Ecclesiological and Soteriological] The mutual confession of sins and the restoration of the wandering brother in 5:15–20 realize the Corpus Christi in a community that overturns the patron-client order of the Greco-Roman world. They fulfill the trajectory of Proverbs 10:12 (MT), and they serve as the covenantal media externa by which God preserves his elect to the end.
4. Scope and Focus of Exegesis
This study limits its scope to James 5:13–20 in the NA28 Greek text. It offers a close lexical, etymological, and syntactic analysis of the key terms: ἀλείφω and χρίω, ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου, ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως, ἐνεργουμένη, ὁμοιοπαθής, προσευχῇ προσηύξατο, πλανάω, ἐπιστρέφω, and καλύπτω. It also compares primary sources from the Dead Sea Scrolls (1QS, CD, 4Q509), wisdom and apocalyptic literature (Sirach, 4 Ezra), and rabbinic material (m. Ta'anit).
II. Body: Exegetical and Historical Argument for the Four Propositions
1. The Anointing as a Non-Sacerdotal Pastoral Sign of Grace (James 5:13–15; Proposition 1)
(a) Lexical Contrast and Grammatical Hierarchy: ἀλείφω and χρίω
The syntax of 5:14 sets out the church's formal ministry in these terms:
> "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord
The grammatical center of the verse is the third-person plural aorist active imperative proseuxasthōsan ("let them pray"), which is the main verb.7 The participle aleipsantes ("anointing"), an aorist active participle, is syntactically subordinate to it. Daniel B. Wallace's account of Greek syntax holds that an aorist participle accompanying an imperative main verb typically expresses an attendant circumstance or means.8 The elders' task is therefore prayer. The anointing gives concrete form to that prayer and accompanies it as a secondary act.9
James's choice of vocabulary sharpens the point. Where the language of official consecration was available in chriō, James consistently uses aleiphō, which denotes physical application of oil. According to BDAG and NIDNTTE, aleiphō appears in the New Testament only in physical contexts: anointing the head at a banquet, bathing, preparing a corpse, and treating a sick body. It is never used for the consecration of an office.10
[Lexical contrast and syntax of ἀλείφω and χρίω]
┌─ χρίω (chriō) ───> Messianic appointment, outpouring of the Spirit,
│ conferral of sacred authority (cultic and theological use)
└─ ἀλείφω (aleiphō) ─> Massage, care of the sick, physical application of oil
(practical and pastoral use)
└─ ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ: aorist active participle + instrumental dative (dative of means)
└─ attendant to the main verb προσευξάσθωσαν ("let them pray")
In the Septuagint aleiphō occasionally describes priestly ordination (Exodus 40:15 LXX), but in the New Testament setting the presbyters (presbyteroi) are not priests who offer sacrifice. They are members of a congregation who exercise pastoral care and oversight, a role rooted in synagogue tradition.11
James's use of aleiphō rather than chriō therefore tells against the claim of Roman Catholic scholasticism that the sacrament is a priestly rite. It also qualifies Calvin's view that the gift of healing ended with the apostolic age as a visible sign of the Spirit. That view overlooks the character of this passage as a standing ministry of the church, carried out by office-bearers in the continuing care of the whole person. The anointing is not a neo-sacerdotal rite. It is a symbolic act of entrustment and a visible sign of grace. The church embraces the weakened member (ton kamnonta, v. 15) and places him in God's faithful covenantal care.12
2. Christological Fulfillment: The Name of the Lord and the Overturning of Priestly Mediation (James 5:14–15; Proposition 2)
(a) ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου and Christological Monotheism
The decisive phrase in 5:14 is "in the name of the Lord" (ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου), which names the sphere in which the elders anoint and pray over the sick person. The identity of the "Lord" (kyrios) shapes the theological character of the whole passage.
As Richard Bauckham and Douglas J. Moo have shown, James holds a very early form of Christological monotheism.13 In 2:1 Jesus Christ is proclaimed "the Lord of glory" (τῆς δόξης), and in 2:7 believers are called by "the good name invoked over you" (τὸ καλὸν ὄνομα τὸ ἐπικληθὲν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς). As Dan G. McCartney rightly observes, in 5:14 "in the name of the Lord" and in 5:15 "the Lord will raise him up" (ἐγερεῖ αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος) point to the Father and, necessarily, to the exalted Jesus Christ.14
[The "name of the Lord" and Christological structure in James 5] ┌─ James 2:1 ────> "the Lord of glory, Jesus Christ" (the divine identity of Christ) ├─ James 2:7 ────> "the good name invoked over you" (possession and covenantal calling) ├─ James 5:14 ───> prayer "in the name of the Lord": fulfillment of John 14:14 │ (invocation of the name of Jesus) └─ James 5:15 ───> "the Lord will raise him up": the sovereign healing of the exalted Christ
When the elders pray over the sick person "in the name of the Lord," they carry out in history the promise of the exalted Christ: "If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it" (John 14:14).15
(b) The Yom Kippur Liturgy and Its Christological Completion
In the Yom Kippur liturgy of Second Temple Judaism, the high priest invoked the tetragrammaton (YHWH), confessed the sins of the people (widduy), and asked for atonement (1QS 1:21–25). The Qumran Yom Kippur prayers (4Q509 3 2–9 // 1Q34 2+1) request that mercy be poured out "like drops of rain on the sown land, like showers on the fields in season."16
James does not transfer this high-priestly mediation directly to the elders or to the believers of his time. The warrant for the community to confess sins to one another and to ask for healing with boldness does not lie in the moral excellence of any human mediator. It lies in the name of the true high priest, Jesus Christ, who entered the heavenly sanctuary once for all (ephapax), as Hebrews 7–10 declares.17 The name of Christ covers the believers.
The "prayer of faith" (ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως, v. 15) is likewise not a magical assurance by which humans manipulate God. As Daniel B. Wallace analyzes the construction, the genitive τῆς πίστεως is a genitive of origin and also a subjective genitive. The prayer springs from faith that submits fully to the saving sovereignty of Christ.18 The one who raises the sick and forgives sins is therefore not the oil, a material substance, nor the believer's merit in faith. It is the high priest Jesus Christ, living at the right hand of God and working effectively.
3. The Prayer of the Righteous and Providential Concurrence (Concursus Divinus) (James 5:16–18; Proposition 3)
(a) The Syntactic Problem of ἐνεργουμένη: Divine Passive and Human Dynamism
The second half of 5:16 is among the most compressed statements about the dynamics of prayer in the New Testament:
> "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much (πολὺ ἰσχύει δέησις δικαίου ἐνεργουμένη)."
The interpretation of the present participle ἐνεργουμένη has long divided commentators.
- The middle-voice reading (BDAG, Wallace, Lenski, Torrey) takes energeomai as a middle, so that prayer avails much when it is "effective in its working," that is, operative in its own power.19 Richard Foster, citing Eugene Peterson, describes prayer as neither a human manipulation of God nor a passive submission to divine action. It is a voluntary participation in God's action, through which the one who prays shares in its benefit.20
- The divine-passive reading (Blomberg, Martin, Bounds, Mayor) holds that Craig Blomberg is right to call the rendering of energoumenē as "fervent" an anachronistic fallacy, one that reads modern psychological categories into the Greek.21 In the New Testament, the middle and passive participles of energeō used with spiritual and supernatural force (2 Cor. 1:6; Gal. 5:6; Eph. 3:20) describe power that is imparted and set in motion by God or the Spirit as the ultimate agent. The participle is therefore best read as "when it is energized by God."22 E. M. Bounds argues that the external power of prayer is determined by the divine inworking of the Spirit in the believer's heart.23
[The providential integration of ἐνεργουμένη] ┌─ Divine passive ──> the Spirit kindles the desire to pray in the believer's heart │ (divine inworking) └─ Middle-voice dynamic ──> the believer obeys willingly and joins in divine action (participatory action) └─ Synthesis: prayer as causa secunda, carrying out the decree of the first cause (causa prima) within history
The great power of the prayer of the righteous therefore does not come from the intensity of the human emotion. It comes from the grace of God, who sovereignly stirs up the prayer and answers it.
(b) Elijah and the Demythologizing of the Rain Tradition: Causa Secunda
James turns to Elijah to demonstrate the efficacy of prayer (vv. 17–18). The Second Temple wisdom book Sirach (48:1–3) praises Elijah as a prophet "whose word burned like a torch," who called down drought by the word of the Lord, brought fire three times, and was to restore the tribes of Israel. He is depicted as a superhuman figure.24 4 Ezra (7:109) also presents Elijah as the model of the righteous person who obtained rain for the people during a drought.25 The Mishnah tractate Ta'anit (m. Ta'anit 3:8) recounts the charismatic authority of Honi (Onias), who drew a circle and stood within it to force rain.26
James introduces Elijah in a way that dismantles this heroic mythology at once:
> "Elijah was a man with a nature like ours (Ἠλίας ἄνθρωπος ἦν ὁμοιοπαθὴς ἡμῖν) ..."
The adjective homoiopathēs describes a human being subject to the same feelings, sufferings, finitude, and fears, as in Acts 14:15 and Wisdom 7:1.27 Elijah collapsed under the broom tree and asked to die, a weak human being (1 Kings 19:4).
Yet when he prayed fervently (προσευχῇ προσηύξατο, a Semitic-style construction that reproduces the Hebrew infinitive absolute and intensifies the verb to express the highest degree of earnest prayer),28 the heavens were shut and then opened. Why? In 1 Kings 18:1 God had already declared his sovereign decree: "I will send rain upon the earth" (first cause, causa prima).29 The rain did not fall of its own accord. It fell upon the earth through the prayer of Elijah on Mount Carmel, who bent down with his face between his knees and cried out seven times. That prayer was the second cause (causa secunda).30
John Calvin systematized this understanding in Institutes 3.20.2–3, and Herman Bavinck confirmed it in Reformed dogmatics under the doctrine of concursus divinus, the concurrence of God and creatures. God has decreed not only the end but also the means by which that end is realized in history, including prayer.31 The "righteous" (dikaios) of James 5:16 is not an autonomous moral hero. He is a believer who, through the righteousness of Christ, submits wholly to God's covenantal will. The prayer of the righteous therefore does not alter God's decree, as an open-theistic chance would suggest. It is the path through which God's unchanging sovereign providence is most fully realized in history.32
4. The Communion of Saints and the Covenantal Media Externa of Perseverance (James 5:15–16a, 19–20; Proposition 4)
(a) The Overturning of Worldly Order and the Space of the Body of Christ
The command of 5:16, "Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας καὶ εὔχεσθε ὑπὲρ ἀλλήλων, ὅπως ἰαθῆτε), is not simply a private ethic. It overturns the social order of the first century.
As David A. deSilva and Halvor Moxnes have shown, Mediterranean society in the first century was organized around a vertical patron-client system, in which the superior patron provided resources to dependent clients and monopolized honor and loyalty, and around competitive honor-shame dynamics.33 The Corinthian church brought this worldly vertical hierarchy into the Lord's Supper. The wealthy ate private meals in the dining room (triclinium), while the poor were shamed in the courtyard (atrium). In this way they failed to "discern the body" (1 Cor. 11:17–34).34
[Worldly patronage order versus the alternative community of the body of Christ] ┌─ Greco-Roman worldly order ──> vertical patronage, monopolized honor, │ exclusion and shaming of the weak (the distortion in 1 Cor. 11) ├─ Qumran Essene purity order ──> permanent expulsion of the morally impure │ and judicial punishment (exclusionary practice in 1QS, CD) └─ James's new covenant community ─> horizontal mutual confession (ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις), reintegration of the sick, and the realization of the body of Christ and the communion of saints
James extends the mediating responsibility of the elders to the whole congregation as horizontal mutuality.35 The verb of the purpose clause, iathēte ("that you may be healed"), is in the second-person plural. As McCartney's exegesis suggests, the sickness of a community torn apart by the exploitation of the rich and the complaints of the poor can be healed in its entirety only when believers confess their faults to one another and kneel for one another in mutual intercession.36
This is more than a sociological alternative to a fictive kinship. It is the holy manifestation of the Corpus Christi Mysticum, the mystical body united organically to Christ its head. Hebrews 13:1–3 urges readers to care for suffering brothers and sisters outside the worldly camp, "since you also are in the body." James's mutual confession and prayer is the summit of the communion of saints, in which the members share in the priestly work of Christ.37
(b) Proverbs 10:12 (MT) and the Covenantal Media Externa of Perseverance
The closing verses (19–20) declare the church's pastoral responsibility toward a brother facing the danger of apostasy:
> "My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back ... whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins."
In verse 19, "wanders from the truth" (planēthē apo tēs alētheias) uses "truth" to comprehend doctrinal knowledge and practical obedience as a whole ('emet). "Wandering" refers not to a simple error but to a fatal apostasy that leads to eschatological death (thanatos).38
Faced with this grave warning, James does not follow the Qumran community in expelling and cursing apostates at once (1QS 7:1–25).39 He calls for brotherly correction (tokhachah), grounded in Leviticus 19:17–18, in the spirit of the good shepherd who seeks the lost sheep (Matt. 18:12–14). The brother is to be turned back (epistrepsē, the Greek rendering of Hebrew šûb).40
The phrase "will cover a multitude of sins" (καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν, v. 20) is an independent citation of the Masoretic Text of Proverbs 10:12: "Love covers all offenses." The Septuagint of Proverbs 10:12 reads differently and loses something of the original sense through translation, but James 5:20 and 1 Peter 4:8 preserve the redemptive horizon of the Masoretic tradition.41
[Textual tradition of Proverbs 10:12 and comparison with James 5:20]
("love covers all offenses")
("friendship covers those who do not quarrel" the sense is altered)
("love covers a multitude of sins" reflects the MT tradition)
(God completely forgives and covers the sin)
The ultimate agent who covers sin and saves from death is God.42 Dogmatically, this verse does not support the Arminian doctrine that salvation can be lost. As the Canons of Dort (5.14) declare, God does not preserve his elect by a mechanical fatalism. He keeps them through the media externa: the solemn warnings against apostasy and the loving exhortation of fellow believers.43
Restoring a brother to the truth therefore does not demonstrate the uncertainty of salvation. It shows the glorious way in which God's eternal decree to preserve his elect is accomplished in history through the prayer and communion of the church.44 Those who once judged and condemned their brothers with the tongue (4:11) become those who cover a brother's faults with the love of the cross and bring him back to life. This is the evangelical destination at which James arrives.
III. Objections and Replies
1. Objection 1: The Anointing (5:14) as a Priestly Ordination (LXX Exodus 40:15) Continued in a Sacramental Institution of the Church
- Summary of the objection: In the Septuagint of Exodus 40:15, aleiphō is used when Aaron's sons are set apart as priests. In James 5:14 the church's official office-bearers (presbyteroi) administer the anointing. On this reading the passage is a scriptural basis for a sacramental priestly anointing that cleanses the soul of guilt, that is, for extreme unction.
- Reply: This objection distorts both the ecclesiology of the New Testament and the context of the passage. First, the presbyteros of the New Testament is not a priest who offers sacrifice (sacerdos). He is an elder of the synagogue tradition, and in verse 16 the subject of prayer expands immediately to the whole congregation (allēlois).45 Second, the main verb in syntactic terms is proseuxasthōsan ("let them pray"). Aleipsantes ("anointing") is a subordinate participle.46 Third, in verse 15 what saves the sick person is not the material of oil but the "prayer of faith" and the raising up by the Lord Jesus Christ.47 The anointing in this passage is therefore not a sacerdotal sacrament. It is a pastoral symbol that accompanies the visible act of prayer and entrusts the sick person to God's covenantal hand.
2. Objection 2: ἐνεργουμένη (5:16b) as a Middle Voice Meaning the Believer's Subjective Fervor (Energetic)
- Summary of the objection: The traditional King James rendering ("effectual fervent prayer") and some commentators read ἐνεργουμένη as a middle voice, so that the believer's inner zeal and persistent effort produce the effectiveness of prayer.
- Reply: As Craig Blomberg argues, projecting the modern psychological sense of "energy" or "zeal" onto the ancient verb energeō is an anachronistic error.21 In New Testament syntax, when this participle is joined to spiritual history, it should be read as a divine passive in which the ultimate agent, God, supplies the power.22 The strength of prayer does not come from human religious merit. It is released when the Spirit sets desire in the believer's heart and works within him. Prayer is not an autonomous means for changing God's decree. It is a second cause (causa secunda) that carries out God's sovereign providence in the present.48
3. Objection 3: The Warning of 5:19–20 as Proof That True Believers Can Finally Lose Their Salvation
- Summary of the objection: In verse 19 a person among "you" (ἐν ὑμῖν) wanders from the truth, and in verse 20 that person faces "death" (thanatos). On this reading the passage shows that a truly regenerate Christian who abandons the faith can fall into eternal damnation.
- Reply: This reading separates God's decree and the perseverance of the saints from the means of grace by which God accomplishes them, and so it is superficial. James does not treat the danger of apostasy as a hypothetical game. He warns of it as a real catastrophe.49 But as the Canons of Dort (5.14) declare, when God preserves his chosen people, he does not leave them in a vacuum. He brings them to repentance through the media externa of the warning of Scripture and the loving exhortation of brothers and sisters.43 The church's work of turning a brother back from death does not prove the fragility of salvation. It shows the mechanism by which the unchanging preserving grace of God is realized within the covenantal solidarity of the communion of saints.50
IV. Conclusion: Summary and Pastoral and Theological Implications
This study has read James 5:13–20 through Greek syntax, through intertextual comparison with Second Temple Jewish literature, and through a comprehensive dialogue with historical Reformed dogmatics. The conclusions and pastoral implications established here are as follows.
First, the anointing in James 5:14 is not a sacerdotal extreme unction or a superstitious magical cure. It is a non-sacerdotal pastoral sign of grace. Through the elders, the church takes the weakened and exhausted member into its visible embrace, lays hands on him, and commends him to the special presence and care of God.
Second, all healing and forgiveness in the passage take place "in the name of the Lord," that is, the name of Jesus Christ. This is the Christological fulfillment that unites the high-priestly mediation of the Yom Kippur tradition with the once-for-all high-priestly office of the exalted Christ, completed in his cross and resurrection (Solus Christus).
Third, ἐνεργουμένη in 5:16b refers to the inner dynamic of the Spirit. It is a divine passive and a holy participation. As Elijah's prayer shows, it is a second cause (causa secunda) of providential concurrence, through which God's unchanging decree takes concrete form in history.
Fourth, the mutual confession of sins and the restoration of the apostate in 5:15–20 are the spatial reality of the body of Christ (Corpus Christi), which overcomes both the worldly patronage order of the first century and the exclusionary practice of Qumran. Through this community, the redemptive love of Proverbs 10:12 is mediated, and God preserves believers to the end as the covenantal media externa of the perseverance of the saints.
The contemporary church, groaning under fragmented individualism and worldly success, needs to recover this final cry of James. It needs a community that prays together in suffering, whose elders visit and kneel beside the weak in sickness, that sets aside worldly shame and condemnation and confesses sins to one another, and that does not give up on a brother wandering from the truth. It seeks him out and covers his sins with love. In such a community the resurrection life and the full healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ, who reigns over the universe, will be made manifest.

대부분의 근대 영어 번역본(NIV, ESV)이 이를 취하여 "in its working" 혹은 "as it is working"으로 의역하였다.
(De-heroization)
III. (Objections & Responses)

중간태 (Middle Voice) [Moo, McCartney, BDAG, Lenski] - 의미: "기도가 그 자체의 내재적 효력 안에서 작동할 때 (when it exercises itself / in its working)" - 신학적 함의: 의인의 기도 속에 방출될 준비가 된 객관적 능력이 내재함. 2. 신적 수동태 (Divine Passive) [Blomberg, Martin, Ropes, Mayor] - 의미: "기도가 하나님(성령)에 의해 활성화되고 작동될 때 (when it is energized by God)" - 신학적 함의: 기도의 효력 기원이 인간의 정서가 아닌 하나님의 주권적 은혜에 있음.
[구약 MT vs 신약/제2성전기 전승의 엘리야 가뭄 기간 대조] ┌─ 열왕기상 18:1 (MT) ---------> "제3년에 여호와의 말씀이 엘리야에게 임하여..." (대략적 수치) └─ 야고보서 5:17 // 누가복음 4:25 -> "3년 6개월 (3.5년 = 7년의 절반)" ├─ 다니엘 7:25 / 12:7 -------> 종말론적 시련과 환난의 상징적 기간 (한 때, 두 때, 반 때) ├─ 벤 시라 (Sirach 48:1–3) -> 하늘을 닫고 주의 말씀으로 기근을 부른 불의 선지자 └─ 4에스라 (4 Ezra 7:109) ---> 가뭄 때 백성을 위해 비를 내려달라고 중보한 의인
III.
(Divine Passive, "when it is energized by God")

III.
